Northern Lights July Rally Alpena, Michigan
We arrived at the beautiful Alpena Fairgrounds on Thursday. The first order of business was happy hour where we got to see our friends and gave out the schedule of the rally . There was 18 members and 1 guest FMCA member.
Then we all met at John A Lau Saloon for dinner. This is the oldest restaurant / bar in Alpena. It was full of artifacts of the area, antiques and many mounts of animals from all over the world. Even though Jean and Betty wanted to kiss the moose, we told them that they couldn’t win another T-shirt like in Traverse City, they decided not to. We were also told that the ghost of Agnes Lau might show up for dinner but no sightings were reported. Then we had a fabulous dinner buffet put on by the John A Lau staff.
Friday morning started out with Betty’s and Jack Bates fantastic Eggs Aliganti Perfecto. Everyone agreed it was GREAT! Then most of the attendees boarded the Lady Michigan Shipwreck Tour boat in beautiful Thunder Bay and Lake Huron. We got to see shipwrecksin their glass bottom boat, light houses and learned many interesting facts like, the sinking of the Chicken barge. The chickens swam to a remote island on which a man started his own business selling cooked chicken with his special recipe as people were tired of fish and people came from all over to get some. It was said years later that he was traveling south on a train and got into a card game, bet his recipe and lost to a player? You guess it, the man’s name was Sanders! If it’s true or not it was fun to hear the story. It was a beautiful sunny day and a lot of fun.
At happy hour the members got together and did a Yankee swap. Everyone had a lot of laugh’s and Fun.
Saturday started out with Baily’s Irish Crème French Toast, Bloody Mary’s and coffee. What a great way to start the day. The rest of the day was left open to enjoy the Brown Trout Festival, art fairs, wine festival and the beautiful Alpena area.
Sunday morning was coffee, donuts and goodbye hugs until the next rally in Port Sanilac See you there!.
A special thanks to the Alpena Fairgrounds for making it a great rally experience and Betty and Jack Bates for putting on a great rally. Ed and Ann Bearse and Kathy O'Bee
