Lake Linden Rally in the Upper Peninsula
This was a Super rally with Jack and Betty Bates and Ed and Anne Bearse doing a fantastic job as rallymasters!
Those attending were the Bates, Bearse, Bird, Bourgeois, Chubb, Cline, Conrad, Curtis, Hollister, Krec, Kunze, Miller, Milroth, O’Bee, Rose, Rypma, Sroka and Woller.
The weather was perfect for our Happy Hour on Tuesday at the beautiful, quiet campground on the lake. Jack Bates introduced the new members and passed out the chamber packets with the schedule for the week. Several of us headed out to the Michigan House Café & Red Brewing Company for dinner ten miles away in Calumet. Excellent service and a great meal.
Wednesday morning was the famous pancake bakeoff starring Jack Bates and Ed Bearse. One particular note, Maggie Chubb was the first one there and she made it to every morning breakfast during the rally!! No getting away from the badge sheriff! Unfortunately, Ed’s electrical outlet kept blowing fuses which put him at a disadvantage but we enjoyed both of their pancakes and sausages! Ed wants a rematch next year!! From there, we went to the Houghton County Historical Museum seeing a huge model HO gauge railroad display and followed up with a short train ride and interesting narrative of the history of the mines. The trains sparked a lot of interest and memories to many of us from our younger days including Don Rypma!
Lunch in downtown Lake Linden followed at the Chocolate Shoppe Restaurants with generous portions and delicious malted milks! If those weren’t enough, later came the Wine and Chocolate Tasting by Jack and Betty Bates which gave new meaning to High and Wide!
Jack supplied seven different wines from his home winery with great explanations of how they’re made and the home made chocolates with ingredients from all over the world were fantastic! Thank you Jack and Betty! Shirley, Bob and Jessica, the campground managers joined us too.
Thursday was more relaxed with fresh coffee cake and coffee in the morning followed by a tour of the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Lake Linden. It was breathtaking and hopefully you’ll see some photos I’ll post on this site. The afternoon was free and many of us went to Ft. Wilkins in Copper Harbor, visited the monk’s Jampot Bakery and thimbleberry jam store, the Historic Calumet Theatre and shops and beautiful beaches. Happy Hour turned cold and wet so we were happy to meet at the Denali Restaurant and did what we do best, EAT! The food and service was excellent and we’d definitely go back there again!
Friday morning was coffee and fresh locally made cinnamon rolls and Goodbyes and Hugs until the next rally in Traverse City.
Ed. Note: Even though this rally was 600 miles from our home in Adrian, we’re so glad we went! It was really a great location and rally! Thanks Rallymasters! Tom
