Muskegon Rally, June 2013
Tuesday. The Muskegon Rally started out with somewhat cloudy conditions for cocktail hour. Sixteen units arrived to enjoy the events planned by rally masters Larry and Char Jacobson. As usual, Cloudy cocktails were the first organized event. There is always good conversation there before potluck. By the time we left the potluck the clouds had disappeared, the sun was shining brightly as the group gathered by the campfire. Did I mention mosquites???
Wednesday. What a busy day! I believe everyone enjoyed the Muskegon Heritage Museum. Larry Jacobson is a volunteer there as well as Ned Dake's son, Allan. The museum covered much of the manufacturing history of the area. Early lumbering, Howmet, Brunswick, engines for military tanks, fish down-riggers and even Raggedy Ann dolls were a few of the local products and industries featured. Many of the pieces on display were in working conditions such as the player piano and the bowling alley.
Many of us walked to the Lakeshore Museum where there was a special event of Charles Schultz, the creator of the Snoopy comic strip. We continued walking to the Scolnick House built in the late 1880's and depicted a depression era home. The Hackley Hose Co. No. 2 was next door. This is a replica of the fire barn that protected the neighborhood. Our last tour was of the Hackley and Hume Homes. The woodwork at the Hackley house was unbelievable. The 14 stain glassed windows were beautiful.
Happy Hour might have brought a frown because half way through the rain started. Most of the group headed back to their units but a few members stuck it out. No one melted.
Thursday's photos and review were passed to me from Tom Bird. I do not have a printer here so I could not copy to pass along Tom's exact words. I will forward to e-mail.
The day began sunny and bright after rain, lightening and thunderboomers during the night. Members visited the WW2 LST 393 Landing Craft. This was no Carnival Cruise but a picture of much history. A Vietnam display was also available to view. Nearby was the USS Silversides WW2 submarine and Naval Museum on Muskegon Lake along with the prohibition era Coast Guard Cutter. It is difficult to imagine how our troops spent their time of work and leisure on these mighty vessels.
Dinner for 35 members was held at the 750 Bar and Grill where many a hungry folks indulged in delicious rib plates. Thank-you Tom for the text and pics forward to me to post.
Note!!!!! Still looking for the few photos of Maggie in a surprising situation. Will post soon.
Thanks, Larry and Char for once again taking on the job of yet another Rally. Let's see different members taking on the responsibility of handling a rally. It is a great experience.
See you all in Bay City, July 17th !!!!
