Traverse City Rally
August 21-24, 2018
The August rally got off to a fast start with 21 coaches attending. Those present were: Bates, Bearse, Bird, Chubb, Conrad, Daubresse, Dingman, Hamlin, Hollister, Ikens, Kloha/Park, Miller, Rypma, Sroka, Verellen, Wierman and Wylie. Guest of George and Vicki Daubresse were Mike and Kay Cichon. New members attending were Dennis and Juliana Garner and their son Trent, Ed and MarySue House and Dave and Mary Anne Verstraete. Welcome!
The rally began with Happy Hour on Tuesday followed by dinner at the historic “Sleder’s Family Tavern” in Traverse City. Beth, the manager, gave us a short review of the history of Sleder’s, after which many of us lined up to “Smooch the Moose” for a chance at a prize. Winners of T-shirts saying “I Smooched the Moose at Sleder’s” were Betty Bates and Jeanne Rypma. Congratulations to both!
Wednesday started with coffee, donuts, muffins and fruit along with good conversation. The remainder of the day was open for everyone to explore Traverse City and the surrounding area.
Wednesday’s happy hour was followed by pizza and some great entertainment by singer Billy Lindsey. We were treated to some country tunes and classic oldies. The second half of the program was none other than ELVIS! The big surprise was the first Elvis we saw. President Ed Bearse looked quite stunning in an Elvis wig and sunglasses, although he didn’t sing. It was an evening of great entertainment and great fun. Dick and Ann Joiner, Doug and Judy Johnson and Larry and Barb Vanderburg joined us for the pizza and the entertainment.
After breakfast on Thursday, 24 of us headed across town to Traverse City Commons, (formerly the State Hospital), for a walking tour around Building 50, the largest in the complex. These buildings have been or are currently being reconstructed and refurbished, with numerous shops, restaurants, offices and condos occupying them. The tour guide treated us to a very interesting additional tour of the underground tunnels that run between all the buildings.
Thursday’s happy hour included an ice cream social with “special toppings’, and a Birthday cake for Al Kloha’s 75th birthday.
Friday morning included coffee, donuts and goodbyes until September. It was a super week and we thank the rally masters Barb and Jim Miller and Bruce and Dorothy Wierman for all their work!
