September Northern Lights Rally
in Mt Pleasant, Michigan.
The last rally of 2017 was at the beautiful Soaring Eagle Hideaway Resort. The attendees were: Ken & Alice Hamlin, Helen & Dick Guisinger, Dorothy & Bruce Wierman, Kathy O’Bee, Barb & Jim Miller, Bob & Shirley Dingman, Marcia & Tom Bird, Diana & Jerry Conrad, Sherri & Ed Sroka, Betty & Jack Bates, Nancy & Ron Bourgeois, Vicki & George Daubresse, Nona & Dick Wylie, Carol & Al Kloha, Bev & Bob Garcia, Maggie & Rod Chubb, Jeanne & Don Rypma, Judy & Doug Johnson, Marcy & Steve Aller and Anne & Ed Bearse. Kay & Mike Cichon were guests of Vicki and George Daubresse at the rally.
The rally started out with happy hour where everyone found out they got $10 free play per day of the rally at the Soaring Eagle Casino. (Rumors are there were some big winners). The weather was threatening but cleared up for the rest of the rally.
Friday, the second day of the rally, was designated as Clare, MI day. After coffee & donuts in the club house, everyone headed to Clare to enjoy the many great restaurants and explore the area. On everyone’s hit list was a stop at the National Famous COPS & DONUTS shop with unique donuts like a long john with bacon on top called the “Squealer”. In the afternoon we met at the Congregational United Church of Christ for a tour and talk. This church is on the National Historical Registry. Then everyone went the Clare post office to see some of Depression Art that was commissioned by the WPA to give work to artists during the Great depression. Following that, everyone walked down the Art Alley and was greeted by Kim Kleinhardt, a local artist and owner of the 515 Gallery there. She explained the different art forms and artistic displays in the alley. Next, we all met at the Idea Theater that was built in 1932 to watch a documentary on the notorious Purple Gang and how they affected Clare back in the 1920’s. After the movie we adjourned to the Doherty Hotel where 4th generation Dean Doherty gave the history the hotel and a tour including the Depression Art in the Tap Room. Ed Bearse worked there as a young man and passed on several stories of life in the hotel back then. Very entertaining! Then we all enjoyed a great buffet dinner with all the trimmings!
Saturday was the end of the year business meeting for 2017, election of officers and our charity gift of $350 to the Community Compassion Network. In the afternoon we took a tour of the Chippewa Ziibwing Cultural Indian Museum. This was a real eye opening experience and very interesting!
Sunday was the last day and after coffee and donuts, we had a visit from the Soaring Eagle Mascot Bear. Then followed by hugs and goodbyes until next year.
Diana & Jerry Conrad, Anne & Ed Bearse and Kathy O’Bee were the rally masters and we thank them for a great time!
That ends our four rallies of the year and we thank all the members for their hard work providing an enjoyable experience with good friends over the summer! While everyone disperses north, south, east or west, we wish you safe and healthy travels and look forward to seeing you next June in Allegan, MI for the Great Lakes rally!
