Sanford Michigan Rally – August 15-18, 2024
This was a joint event with the Lansing Area Winnies (LAW) and was hosted by the Schraders and Atkinsons. The group camped at the Sanford Community of Christ Campground, situated right on the banks of Sanford Lake, which, as you may remember, was drained due to the collapse of three dams during the rainstorm of 2022. It is interesting to see the lake bed with a small river running through it and all of the boat docks sitting high and dry above several feet above the ground.
Thursday night began with a gathering on the banks of the lake with all in attendance, including Northern Lights members Ron & Janet Atkinson, Rose & David Fife, Duane & Sheryl Maxwell, Ron Mercer & Pat Korloch, David & Marguerite Schrader, and several members of LAW…21 people in total.
It was followed by dinner at Antonio’s Bar and Grill in Midland. There were a variety of selections on the menu and everyone loved the food. Their specials of the night included baby back ribs and stuffed pork chops. And, we cannot forget to mention the delicious desserts!
The rain came in hot and heavy on Friday, but it did not deter us from meeting for breakfast. Rose Fife prepared mouth-watering breakfast burritos. Attendees were on their own for the day. And, in spite of the rain, some went shopping, some went to Jay’s-Webber Wildlife Museum in Clare (next to Jay’s Sporting Goods), and some went to the Alden B. Dow home in Midland. He was an architect and had a similar design philosophy to Frank Lloyd Wright.
Dinner was a potluck with Dave’s (Schrader) Famous burnt ends, not to be confused with Famous Dave’s! They were delicious and plentiful. There were lots of side dishes, including potato salad, garden salad, macaroni and cheese, and cowboy baked beans, PLUS cookies, brownies, coconut cream pie, eclairs, and spice cake.
Saturday brought more rain and most hung out at the campground in the morning after a pancake breakfast. The afternoon, however, brought out the games. The theme was “Your Dream Job”, with a rocketry challenge (the inflated balloon that traveled the farthest), a civil engineering build (the tallest structure made of scrap wood), and an aerospace challenge (the paper airplane that flew the furthest). The winning team was Arlene & Roger Nelson. Ron & Janet Atkinson came in last place. Prizes were awarded for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and last places.
Dinner was a potluck of (mostly) leftovers … a chance to lighten the load home. All of the dishes were just as good as the night before. The rain precluded a fire after dinner.
Sunday, our last day, consisted of a continental breakfast of yogurt, muffins, bagels, sausage balls, and fruit. Everyone then cleaned up, said their “goodbyes, packed up and headed home…until we meet again.
