Grand Rapids Rally
September 18 – 21, 2018
Our last rally of the year was held on the banks of the Grand River at Steam Boat Park and Campground in Jenison, Michigan and what a great time we had! As usual, we had some rain along the way but that didn’t dampen our spirits. Those attending were Rallymasters Lynn and Sandy Sheren, Mike and Marti Kelly, Kathy O’Bee and Ed and Sherry Sroka, all newcomers for this fun project and what a good job they did! Also attending were Jack & Betty Bates, Bob & Shirley Dingman, Ed & Anne Bearse, Tom & Marcia Bird, Don & Sharon Eversmann, Dick & Nona Wylie, Dick & Ilene Ikens, Rod & Maggie Chubb, Bruce & Dorothy Wierman, Teri Cline, Ken & Alice Hamlin, George & Vicki Daubresse, Jerry & Diana Conrad, Jerry & Sue Woller, John & Simone Verellen and guests Mike & Kay Cichon.
We started out on Tuesday with our usual Happy Hour at 4PM with introductions and a plan of events. We followed this with dinner at Vitale’s in Hudsonville so we didn’t have to cook! Great variety of delicious food!
Wednesday morning started out under cloudy and cool skies for coffee, juice, rolls, fresh fruit and bagels but we escaped any rain and headed for Fredrick Meijer Gardens for a tour spearheaded by Kathy O’Bee who considers this her second home! We had a great tram tour of the gardens, statues and other art projects as well as the huge arboretum. Most of us were dragging by late afternoon and enjoyed Happy Hour and dinner on our own.
On Thursday about 5AM, a powerful storm cam rip snortin through flattening Kathy O’Bees awning and building a lake in front of Bates coach but it cleared up in time for our Annual Business Meeting. Elections were held and Jack Bates announced that all officers retained their places for the coming year. Then it was off to a two hour cruise on the Grand Lady Paddle Wheel Boat down the Grand River with an oral presentation on the history of the area. Very interesting! Lots of time for socializing, eats and drinks. The rest of the afternoon was free until dinner at the Grand Villa for steak, fish, chicken or prime rib in Grandville. Did I mention that our club likes to EAT?? Ha!
Friday morning was Coffee, rolls and lots of farewells for the season. Many thanks to the many members that forwarded photos to me for our web site throughout the summer – much appreciated. Thanks again to all of our Rallymasters for their hard work this summer. It really is rewarding and I hope that others will have the opportunity to join in the rally planning next year. We wish all of you a safe and healthy Winter wherever you might go!!
