Sauder Village Rally 2016
Hello from Sauder Village in Archbold, Ohio where we just completed our July 26th Northern Lights Rally! Hosts Ken and Alice Hamlin and Larry and Barb Vanderburg were on site and ready to go! It was a hot time with temps hovering in the 80’s and 90’s when we arrived on Tuesday and sunny weather and sunny dispositions prevailed.
Those attending were the Allers, Birds, Bearses, Hamlins, Bates, Bowles, Chubbs, Daubresses, Kaisers, Millers, Montgomerys, O’Bee, Vanderburgs and guests Lynn and Sandy Sheren. The Sheren’s are from Jenison, MI and they supplied many of the photos you’ll see in this post.
After checking in, we had our meet and greet happy hour and a delicious pot luck dinner with Ken Hamlin naming off the schedule of events for the rest of the rally. We started Wednesday with huge fresh Sauder Village rolls, juice and coffee. Then on to a day at the Sauder Village itself exploring the arts and crafts of yesteryear, a train ride, horse and buggy ride and lots of poking around at all the restored buildings where knowledgeable volunteers dressed in period clothing explained the history of each particular building/crafts. That night was dinner on our own after happy hour and many enjoyed the local restaurants.
Thursday was bright and sunny again and after partaking of the huge rolls and coffee again, we headed to Bryan, Ohio for a tour of the Spangler factory, home of the Dum Dum candy suckers. There is one member who shall remain nameless and will not be asked to lead the caravan to the entertainment in the future! Thinking everyone had already left, he took off like a bird in flight leaving many in the group scrambling to catch up! Sorry……..! After donning our svelte head gear at the factory to avoid decorating the candy with our hair (some of us needn’t bother!), we climbed aboard the trolley for an in depth tour of the factory which produces over two billion Dum Dum candies per year. The company was started in 1906, employs over 400 people and remains in the same Spangler family name to this day! That evening, we headed to the Sauder Village dining room for a delicious down home meal with all the trimmings. Most of us had entirely too much to eat as we’d eaten a large lunch in Bryan after the factory tour, but we forced it down, even choking down some pie and ice cream! Ha!
Friday arrived all too soon and we’re headed back north anticipating the next rally at the Little River Casino in Manistee August 16th. Until then, may the Northern Lights light your way!
