Sanctuary of the Great Lakes, Alpena
Our Alpena Rally at the County Fairgrounds started on Sunday, July 21st. The Rally masters were Mike and Leslie Ostyn and Bob and Bev Garcia. Those attending were: Tom and Marcia Bird, Vicki and George Daubresse, Suzanne and Dennis Dudley, Ken and Alice Hamlin, Bill and Sue Hodder, Ron Mercer and Pat Korloch, Jim and Barb Miller, Rick and Eleanor Payne, John and Angel Reich with guest Katrina Lowrie. Duane and Sheryl Maxwell, new members to our chapter joined us for Coffee Hour, but could not stay with us because they are current hosts at Forty Mile Point Lighthouse. We all had a Chicken dinner with potato salad, coleslaw, roles, and cookies and brownies for dessert.
Monday, after Coffee and Rolls, we headed out for the Great Lakes Shipwreck tour. When we got there the 12:00 tour was sold out, so we visited the Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Museum and had lunch. We all then caught the 3:00 Shipwreck Tour. It was a sunny day and the water was clear for viewing.
Tuesday people explored on their own. Some went to Dinosaur Gardens, and others went to visit Duane and Sheryl at the Forty Mile Point Lighthouse. Rain hit just when we returned to the campground for homemade (by Mike Ostyn) Sloppy Joes and macaroni salad. We didn’t have use of a building, so we got close together under RV awnings. The rain continued through the night.
Wednesday exploration was on your own, but many ended up at Besser Museum for Northeast Michigan. After Happy Hour we all headed to Twin Acres 19th Hole for a great dinner.
We said our goodbyes at Coffee Hour on Thursday. The whole time we were there, we heard dogs barking, and it looked like a day care for dogs was set up. When Leslie and Bev walked closer to look at them, they found out that they were dogs who had been rescued from abusive situations and were being held for trials to come. There is no other shelter for dogs in the county. The same group of people running the dog rescue run a Trap Neuter Return program for cats that is a method for “humanely and effectively managing cat colonies and reducing free roaming cat populations.” If you would like to learn more about them, go to https://northestmichigan tnr.shutterfly.com/ or call 989-255-5733.
