Rally at the Soo
Wow – three rallies in a row with sunny skies, no rain and perfect temperatures! The Rally at the Soo got underway at our campground in Brimley, about 20 miles from Sault St. Marie and on the shores of Lake Superior. Attending were rally masters Jean Feterl, Myrna Angelucci, Jane and Bill Kirschke, Dick and Ilene Ikens, Dick and Kathy Montgomery, Dick and Nona Wylie, Iggy and Cynthia Conrad, Rod and Maggie Chubb, Jerry and Sue Woller, Jack and Betty Bates, Tom, Marcia and Jessica Bird, John and Mary Ellen Kaiser, Bob and Liz Webber, John and Simone Verellen, Tim and Jane Weldon, Richard and Eleanor Payne, Doug and Judy Johnson, George and Vicki Daubresse, Pat Hartwick, Jim and Barbara Miller, Ed and Anne Bearse, Dick and Ann Joyner, Norman and Lynda Fulton, Fred Hollister, Kathy O’Bee, Ted and Ruth Ann Hindes and guests, Steve and Jan Mondl (Honorary NL members from the past).
We started out Tuesday at 5PM with Happy Hour and heavy hors d’oeuvres, stuffing ourselves silly! Bill Kirschke outlined events for Wednesday and Thursday and Dick Montgomery provided information on possible tee shirts, jackets and caps for Northern Lights members.
Wednesday morning got us going at 7:30 with coffee, rolls, fruit, juice, scones, rhubarb muffins, etc. before heading for the Toonerville Trolley. The Toonerville railroad took us about 5 miles thru Upper Michigan's wilderness and we did spot one black bear meandering down the tracks. We then boarded the stately Hiawatha riverboat for the 21 mile trip to the Upper Tahquamenon Falls enjoying the commentary from the captain about the various birds, trees and history of the region. Following a half mile walking path to and from the falls, we returned to the boat and train for the return trip arriving back at 5PM. Dinner was on our own and many took advantage of the Iroquois Casino right across the street from the campground.
Thursday morning was coffee hour again at 7:30 and then we car caravanned to the Cloverland Hydroelectric Power Plant in Sault St. Marie. Our group was split into two groups of 15 and Roger and Phil, the plant managers conducted a tour of the facility from top to bottom and we were impressed with their professional knowledge. We asked many, many questions and took up two and a half hours of their time but found it fascinating! They explained how their small generation unit with 74 turbines feeds into the major electrical grid that powers most of the Midwest! We were free for the afternoon to explore on our own and some went on the Soo Locks tour. That night, we met at the Cozy Inn for dinner. Our group of 50 people did strain their wait staff a bit but everyone got their fill, most going for the fresh delicious white fish.
Friday morning, we finished off the coffee, dairy products and fruit and slowly headed our separate ways with good memories of our friendship and shared activities. Thank you Rally Masters for a great memorable rally!
