LEELANAU RALLY, OCTOBER 4TH-7TH, 2012
First of all I must thank members for sending me photos and e-mails covering the rally for me. I must say that the photos show a beautiful cocktail hour and beautiful people. I am sorry that Bob and I are not present but our shorts and sleeveless shirts from the Arizona weather of 92 today would not meet the fall standards of Michigan.
Dick passed on information to me that around 30 to 32 coaches ended up attending the Leeland rally hosted by Dick and Anne Joyner, Larry and Barb Vanderburg and Jim and Barb Miller. The potluck was a success ans as always there was plenty of food. Pat Barbera made an afghan to raffle off for our charity. Tickets were sold at dinner for $2.00 each or 3 for $5.00. The ticket will be picked this Saturday. For now the afghan has collected $120.00. Isn't that a wonderful gesture from Pat. Many thanks! The last treat offering for our 20th Anniversary celebration combined the funds from the pot of "name tag penalties" for an ice-cream party. Along with the ice-cream, members were able to top the treat off with strawberries, bananas, whip cream in a waffle bowl. Did you save some for me? While on the subject of name tags...apparently Mr. President did not have his on and was fined. A new rule was created perhaps at that moment that demands the Presidents fine to be doubled. Poor Dick. Doug and Judie Johnson recruited new members Jack and Mary Bates. A "warm" welcome to them. Don Wilson, the owner of the RV park and past member of Northern Lights stopped over for "Happy Hour". It seems some of our members are having coach issues that have kept Dick busy on top of his duties as President. This is all the news that has been forwarded to me at this time. The photos that will follow came from Penny Morton. Thank-you, Penny. I also want to thank Larry Vanderburg. I had trouble finding a means to open and transfer his photos so I did not use them.
FRIDAY. A thanks goes out toTom Dorrance who sent me photos today. Dick sent a note about the day. It began cloudy and 45 degrees. YIKES. Coffee Hour included coffee cake, fruit, English Muffins but NO doughnuts. We still can feel and smell those dozen and dozens from the Indy Rally. The group headed to the Music Museum where there were displays of old music players and instruments. An original recording of George Gershwin was played and Dick Montgomery was able to be a "kid at heart" to push the buttons on the organ. The Nickelodeon was next to see. After the tour of the museum the group wondered town for lunch and shopping. Happy Hour needed to be inside for the temperatures outside were tooooooo cold. The poor Mieske's had power issues and were loaded a space heater for their heavy duty extension cord to keep them warm. More on the Rally tomorrow.
SATURDAY: I have gotten bits of news of today's events. The day began cold and rainy with breakfast of "doughnuts". At the business meeting the roster of officers were agreed upon to remain the same for the following 2013 year. The rally coffee hour fee will now be a standard $10.00. Ken Hamlin suggested purchasing a chapter flag and flag pole. Officers delivered that respective reports which will be posted once I get them. Shirley and Bob Dingman, Rod and Maggie Chubb, Ron and Mary Ellen Brown and Dick Montgomery all had perfect 2012 rally attendance. Vicki and George Draubresse invited friends, Norm and Linda Fulton to our rally. We are happy to have them join us. Jane and Bill Kirschke and Bob and Mary Lou Korb drove in for the meeting and to join the group for dinner at the Elks Club. The meal included the trimmings for roast beef and fried fish. Tom Dorrance, again sent me photos with a picture of our new members, Jack and Betty Bates. He also sent photos of the rally winner of the afghan that new member Pat Barbera made and donated to Northern Lights. The winner was not me (boohoo) but Judie Johnson. Judie proceeded to donate the afghan to this years charity, Food Rescue of Northwest Michigan. A big thanks to both Pat and Judie and "holy smokes" to our charity committee, Jane and Bill Kirschke, Sam and Karen Joseph and Jerry and Sue Woller. The afghan raffle collected $164.00 and contributions totaled $1057.00 for a grand total of $1221.00. That is our greatest contribution thus far in our history of charity giving. You must all be proud to lend a hand to those less fortunate. It appears that others won today, too. The Bates won a Bissell and wine was won by the Verellen and Draubresse couples. Our Rally Hosts, the Joyners, Vanderburgs and Millers deserve a pat on the back for a great rally. See you all next year.
