The Grand Rally in June
Our 2021 June rally was held at the Lake Shore RV Resort in St. Ignace and what a Grand rally it was!! The location was perfect for our rigs, gatherings and Happy Hours overlooking the Straits of Mackinac with a view of the Mackinac Bridge,. The Rally Masters were Doris and Mike Price who by the way were new members attending their first rally! Yea!! They did a great job and we thank them for volunteering! Anne and Ed Bearse assisted too! Also attending were new members Bill and Tammy Forbush, Ron Mercer and Pat Korloch, Jim and Sharon Morris, Bill and Sue Hodder and their guests Dave and Pat Gonser from Colorado. While there, Scott and Barbara Builta and Leslie Driesenga also joined our Northern Lights family! A hearty welcome to all of you!
After a long day of driving for some, the rally started out with a meet and greet happy hour and then a pizza party for dinner. The next day after stuffing ourselves with coffee and donuts, everyone went off to explore the area on their own going to museums, souvenir shops, fudge shops, Soo Locks and many other adventures. This was followed by another happy hour and a fantastic dinner at the Driftwood Inn. It was a tough choice between the local favorite, White Fish from Lake Superior cooked on a Cedar plank and the Perch dinner! A full menu was available but these two appeared to be the most popular.
The next day, Thursday, was our fun voyage to Mackinac Island. A special thanks to Andrea Green and the Star Lines Mackinac Island Ferry Co for making this a special event! We boarded the ferry in the morning and on the way to the island, they took the boat under the Mackinac Bridge with many photo ops! Once we got to the dock on Mackinac Island, we hopped on horse drawn surreys as there are no motorized vehicles on the island and had a fun narrated tour of the island. Here we learned about the history of the island going back to the 1600’s and saw the beautiful rock formations, Governor’s mansion and Fort Mackinac. At the end of the tour, we were brought to the Grand Hotel for a super buffet luncheon The Grand Hotel has the longest porch in the world and has been in several movies. The luncheon buffet was in the main dining room overlooking the Straits of Mackinac. The food was over the top with 8 large buffet tables of many varieties of food. After two hours of eating, we waddled out for photos and headed for downtown like good “fudgies” do! (that is what we are called by the locals!) Lots of shops to explore, fudge to buy and more munchies to bring back for happy hour!
The final morning at our coffee and donuts hour, everyone was talking about their adventures on the island. Then we said our goodbyes looking forward to the next rally in Ludington on July 27th!
